It is normal for mental health to change over time. Having a healthy mind means you are resilient to the day to day stress of life, can cope with change and feel able to live with purpose.

Signs and symptoms of mental health

Healthy

Someone with a healthy mind is:

  • able to feel, express and manage a range of positive and negative emotions
  • able to form and maintain good relationships with others
  • able to cope with and manage change and uncertainty
  • aware of the five ways to wellbeing.

Coping

If you are coping, you may experience:

  • changes in mood
  • Fear, worry or anxiety
  • relationship issues or sex drive changes
  • feeling sad or down
  • less interest in daily activities
  • more likely to cancel plans
  • trouble concentrating
  • tiredness, low energy or problems sleeping
  • problems understanding and relating to situations and to people
  • loss of appetite or changes in weight.

Struggling

If you are struggling, you might:

  • feel long-lasting sadness or irritability
  • avoid social situations
  • increase use of alcohol or drugs to cope with feelings
  • get feelings of hopelessness or being trapped
  • get detached from reality, paranoia or hallucinations
  • engage in reckless or risky behaviour.
  • get increased feelings of anger, hostility or violence

Unwell

If you are unwell you may be:

  • pre-occupied with harming self or inflicting self harm
  • calling or visiting people to say goodbye
  • getting affairs in order (giving away possessions, tying up loose ends)
  • saying things like “Everyone would be better off without me” or “I want out”
  • a sudden switch from being extremely depressed to acting calm and happy.

Get urgent help now

Support for Adults – Call 999 in a medical or mental health emergency. This is when someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk . Call 111 if you need urgent medical help or you’re not sure what to do.

Support for Children and Young People – The crisis team operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This service is for young people under 18 who are in crisis, experiencing emotional distress and are struggling to cope. Call (01482) 301701 option 2. (Standard rates apply)
